“Mabel”
17 years old Mabel Lethbridge, volunteered to work in a munitions filling factory in autumn 1917. Only days into the job an explosion ripped the factory apart.
Horrific injuries cast aside; grit, determination and sheer bloody mindedness, drove her on. With one lung and one tin leg, she learned to walk again, swim, ride a bicycle. She ran a soup kitchen and drove a truck during World War 2. She turned journalist and wrote a best-selling autobiography.
She died in 1967, still holding on to her belief in the strength of the human spirit.
